Through March, 26,927 housing units have been permitted statewide in 2018. This is about 25 percent higher than the first three months of 2017. As the graphs below show, March tends to be a strong month for permit activity. 2018 is consistent with this historic pattern, as permits jumped about 25 percent between February and March.

Single family homes (13,677) have made up about half of the statewide total so far this year, as they have in recent years. Single family permits are up 21 percent in the first three months of 2018 compared to 2017.

Multifamily housing units (13,250) account for the other half of the statewide total. Multifamily permits are up 28 percent in the first three months of 2018 compared to 2017.

March was a strong month for single family home permitting in the greater Los Angeles area. 2,135 single family homes were permitted in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties in March 2018. This in notably higher than the average of the last five Marches (1,450).
