November 20, 1997 - We estimate that the current year will end with a reserve of $769 million, or $657 million more than the 1997-98 Budget Act estimate. We further estimate that the budget will remain in balance in the future, with the reserve rising slightly to $836 million in 1998-99, before declining to $304 million in 1999-00.

May 19, 1997 - Sharply improving revenues, combined with large caseload-related budget savings, have enabled the administration to propose significant funding increases in the areas of K-12 education, welfare reform, and local government fiscal relief.

January 15, 1997 - On January 9, the Governor released his 1997-98 state budget proposal. California's continued economic recovery combined with a variety of other factors have enabled the Governor to submit a balanced budget with a modest reserve, moderate expenditure growth including significant increases for education, and a corporate tax reduction.
