Tuition Award | |
Cal Grant A | Provides full tuition coverage for students enrolled at public universities and partial tuition coverage for students enrolled at private colleges and universities. Available for up to four years of full-time study (or its equivalent). |
Cal Grant B | Provides full tuition coverage for students enrolled at public universities and partial tuition coverage for students enrolled at private colleges and universities. Available for up to four years of full-time study (or its equivalent). Not available to students in their first year of college. |
Cal Grant C | Provides tuition coverage for students enrolled at private career technical education programs no shorter than 4 months or longer than 2 years. Available for up to two years of full-time study (or its equivalent). |
UC Grant | Provides tuition and nontuition coverage for students attending the University of California. Available for students during their first four years of attendance. |
CSU State University Grant | Provides tuition coverage for students attending the California State University who are not eligible for a Cal Grant but have financial need. Available for up to six years of full-time study (or its equivalent). |
CCC Board of Governor's Fee Waiver | Provides full fee coverage for students attending the California Community Colleges. |

Cal Grant B, Access | Provides nontuition coverage for students enrolled at public and private colleges and universities. Available for up to four years of full-time study (or its equivalent). |
Cal Grant C, Book and Supply | Provides nontuition coverage for students enrolled at public and private career technical education programs no shorter than 4 months or longer than 2 years. Available for up to two years of full-time study (or its equivalent). |
CCC Full-Time Student Success Grant | Provides nontuition coverage for students attending a California Community College who qualify for the Cal Grant B or C program and enroll in 12 or more credit units per term. Available for up to four years of full-time study (or its equivalent). |
CCC Completion Grant | Provides additional nontuition coverage for Full-Time Student Success Grant recipients who enroll in 15 or more credit units per term and develop an education plan. Available for up to three years if students are enrolled in basic skills courses, otherwise available for up to two years. |
CCC Student Success Completion Grant (Proposed) | Would replace the CCC Full-Time Student Success Grant and CCC Completion Grant with a new program providing nontuition coverage for CCC students who enroll in 12 or more credit units per term and develop an education plan. The grant amount increases as the units taken increase, with the maximum award for those enrolled in 15 or more units per term. Available for up to three years if students are enrolled in basic skills courses, otherwise available for up to two years. |
Notes: Though the criteria to qualify vary by program, the programs shown are need based, generally requiring students to meet certain income and asset tests. The figure reflects rules for undergraduate, resident students as of January 2018. The figure does not include campus-specific aid programs. Nontuition awards typically may cover any living cost, including rent, food, transportation, books, and supplies. Financial aid from UC Grants and CSU State University Grants are applied after Cal Grants. |
