Note: Figure shows selected state and institutional gift aid programs. Although eligibility rules vary by program, these programs generally require students to meet certain financial criteria. See "Financial Aid Award Coverage" for a description of each award.
a Summer financial aid award amounts are at campuses' discretion.
b Students attending private for-profit institutions are ineligible for most types of nontuition awards, except for a Cal Grant B access award of $1,648 or a Cal Grant C book and supply award of $547.
May cover tuition costs if a student does not receive one of the tuition awards in the above category. May also be applied to any other nontuition costs.
d The Middle Class Scholarship may be used for tuition and/or nontuition costs. Award amounts are based on a student's total cost of attendance minus certain other available gift aid, a student contribution from part-time work earnings, and a parent contribution for dependent students with a household income of over $100,000. Foster youth awards cover all remaining financial need. Awards for other students cover 35 percent of their remaining financial need.
e The UC Grant may be used for tuition and/or nontuition costs. Award amounts are based on a student's total cost of attendance minus certain other gift aid, a student self-help contribution, and a parent contribution.
The CSU State University Grant historically has provided full tuition coverage for certain students with financial need not receiving Cal Grant tuition coverage. Beginning in 2025-26, new CSU policy allows these grants also to cover nontuition costs for students with the greatest financial need.
g Award is funded with both federal and state funds.
