Brief Description
The Governor’s January budget requests $54,000 for one office technician to perform clerical workload and process forms that licensees at the Board of Accountancy submit to the Peer Review Program. This program requires the board to conduct reviews of accounting firms every three years. A significant amount of the workload associated with this request is for mailing and processing hardcopy reporting forms.
LAO Recommendation
Reject the Governor’s January proposal to fund one office technician to perform clerical workload. We believe the board could reduce the need for this position and absorb the remaining clerical workload by encouraging or requiring licensees to increase their use of the existing online process for the submission of various forms. We recommend that the Legislature reject this proposal and advise the board to maximize the use of technology, such as the online submission of data and emailing information to licensees. More fully utilizing this technology should enable the board to reduce staff workload associated with mailing and processing hardcopy forms.
