| Notes: | |
| Figure shows need-based state and institutional gift aid programs supported with core funds (state General Fund and student tuition revenue). See "Financial Aid Award Coverage" for a description of each type of award. | |
| Figure does not include federal gift aid programs, the largest of which is the Pell Grant. In 2020-21, the maximum Pell Grant is scheduled to increase by $150 (2.4 percent) to $6,345. Students may use Pell Grants for tuition or nontuition costs. | |
| The maximum award amounts shown in the figure generally have not changed since 2019-20. | |
| The Cal Grant A and B tuition award for nonprofit schools in 2021-22 is conditioned on the nonprofit sector admitting 3,000 students with an associate degree for transfer in 2020-21. If the sector fails to meet this target, its tuition award is scheduled to drop to $8,056. | |
| The UC and CSU summer financial aid award amounts are calculated for a student enrolled in 15 units on a semester calendar. | |
| Students who receive the Cal Grant B Access Award also receive a supplemental award funded by the College Access Tax Credit (CATC). The 2020-21 Budget Act reduces the maximum supplemental award amount from $24 to $12 to reflect a decline in available revenues in the CATC Fund. | |
| We estimate the UC Grant nontuition award based on the average undergraduate cost of attendance, less systemwide tuition and fees and a self-help expectation. | |
| UC = University of California. WASC = Western Association of Schools and Colleges. CSU = California State University. CCC = California Community Colleges. BOG = Board of Governors. | |
