The 2026-27 Budget: California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation

Feb 23, 2026 - Add Support Staff and Equipment to Expand Tele ‑Mental Health. The Governor ’s proposal includes $8.9  million General Fund in the budget year, growing to $13.5  million in 2027 ‑28 and declining to $12.8  million in 2028 ‑29 and ongoing to add support staff and equipment to facilitate the conversion of the on ‑site positions.

Addressing Chronic Vacancies in Prison Mental Health Care

Feb 23, 2026 - These costs would come primarily from buying equipment and having sufficient on site medical assistants. CDCR, in coordination with CalHR, may need to use pay differentials for those who work inside prisons so that such providers have an incentive to remain on site.

Feb 11, 2026 - If the fee levels are lower than current or projected costs, the Legislature would be better equipped to assess (1)  how much of this workload needs to be supported from the General Fund at the cost of other budget priorities or (2)  whether the cost of the workload needs to be reduced —such as through statutory or other changes —to avoid such budgetary trade-offs.
