Feb 25, 2025 - The annual cost of opera ting each MHCB is around $400, 000 —including custody staff. Currently, there are 392 MHCBs at men ’s prisons and 41 MHCBs at women ’s prisons. Normally, MHCBs must be licensed by the California Department of Public Health to ensure compliance with minimum standards established for patient safety and quality of care.
