California's Employment Development Department and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released California's October 2017 state jobs report on November 17, 2017. California's official unemployment rate fell from 5.1% in September to 4.9% in October. The table below summarizes nonfarm employment by sector based on the monthly survey of employers. California's professional and technical services sector—focused on the state's high-paying technology firms—grew by a seasonally-adjusted 3,600 jobs after several months of being stagnant.
