California's Employment Development Department and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released California's August 2018 state jobs report on September 21, 2018. Statewide nonfarm employment grew by an estimated 44,800 in August, although the July estimate was revised downward by 12,300. The state's official unemployment rate remained at 4.2 percent, the lowest recorded rate since the series was first established in 1976, for the fifth straight month. The figure below summarizes nonfarm employment by sector based on the monthly survey of employers. California’s ten largest sectors have all added jobs over the past 12 months, and most of them have grown faster than their national counterparts. Overall employment in the state has grown 2.1 percent compared to 1.6 percent for the nation.
