The 2026-27 Budget: Re-Envisioning State Education Governance

Feb 4, 2026 - In 2019 ‑20, however, the state adopted a new law prohibiting spending reductions after the fiscal year ends. This law allows the state to reduce spending during its first recalculation of the guarantee, but prevents reductions during the second recalculation at the end of the next fiscal year.

The 2022-23 Budget: Initial Comments on the Governor's May Revision

May 16, 2022 - Baseline Spending Higher by $11   Billion. Across the rest of the budget, other baseline costs are higher by $11  billion. This is primarily the result of early legislative action, including adopting $5.7  billion in a variety of revenue reductions —such as the restoration of net operating loss deductions —and $2.7  billion for rental assistance.

Mar 26, 2021 - In late January 2021, the Governor notified the Legislature of his intent to authorize the remaining 2019 ‑20 funds for specific start ‑up costs. Also in January, the Governor proposed providing $14. 5  m illion non ‑Proposition  98 General Fund ($11. 5  m illion ongoing, $ 3  m illion one time) for various other project costs in 2021 ‑22, including creating a new “Cradle to Career ” office within the Government Operations Agency (GovOps).

Feb 18, 2025 - TK Enrollment Has Grown 70   Percent Since 2019. In 2023 ‑24, 151,500 students across the state were enrolled in TK. This reflects an increase of 76,000 students (101  percent) from the 2021 ‑22 school year, the year prior to expansion.

Feb 29, 2024 - State Enacted a Moratorium on New Nonclassroom ‑Based Charter Schools in 2019, Set to Expire in 2026. Due, in part, to the concerns arising from high ‑profile cases, Chapter  486 of 2019 (A B  1505 , O ’Donnell) imposed a two ‑year moratorium on the establishment of new nonclassroom ‑based charter schools (from 2019 to 2021).
