The 2022-23 Budget: Update on K-12 Student Attendance

May 11, 2022 - As Figure  4 shows, 55 of the 58 counties in California have experienced ADA declines during the pandemic. Of these 55  counties, 36 experienced two ‑year declines between 5  percent and 10  percent.

Funds will be distributed competitively and will be available until June 30, 2028. The budget also includes $5  million for a study of ultra-processed foods and restricted foods being offered in school meals in California.

The budget provides $5  million ongoing for annual grants to LEAs to expand community service with instruction or “service learning ” opportunities for high school students pursuing a State Seal of Civic Engagement.

Assessing a Shift to Enrollment-Based School Funding

Jan 6, 2026 - Students are identified as chronically absent if they are absent for more than 10  percent of the time they are enrolled at a school. (A student enrolled at a school district for a full academic year is considered chronically absent if they miss 18 or more days of school.)
