Improving California’s Prison Inmate Classification System

May 2, 2019 - Medium A and B Custody. Inmates who are not required to be on Maximum or Close Custody and do not meet the criteria for Minimum Custody. The default designation is generally Medium A. However, inmates are assigned Medium B Custody in certain cases, such as if there is a need for them to work outside the main security perimeter of the prison.
