Though much lower than statewide vacancy rates, the vacancy rate among Unit 6 classifications also has fluctuated from 8  percent in 2019 to 13  percent in 2023 to 9  percent as of May 31, 2025.

MOU Fiscal Analysis: Bargaining Unit 16 (Physicians, Dentists, and Podiatrists)

Jul 14, 2025 - In the case of dentists, the vacancy rate was 10  percent, which is much lower than the statewide average 21  percent vacancy rate and the 31  percent vacancy rate across Unit 16 positions. While the study indicated that state dentists are retiring at higher rates than statewide or other Unit 16 positions, the elevated retirement rate does not seem to be affecting the state ’s ability to fill dentist positions.

Sep 7, 2023 - While we do not know the statewide average participation rate today, CalHR informs us that, as of July 31, 2023, 87 percent of Unit 6 members have a Savings Plus account and that 57 percent of Unit 6 members contributed to their Savings Plus account in July 2023 with an average contribution amount of $387 to a 457(b) account and $353 to a 401(k) account.
